CSA or Clinical assessment exams are an assessment test of doctors to know their potentiality in incorporating all the skills in the general practice. Usually, clinical, professional, practical, and speaking skills must be integrated, during practicing. MRCGP is a PG course in the UK in the medical field. CSA is part of the MRCGP, which needs to be undergone, to complete the GP training in the UK. 

The CSA Exam is conducted, to test the practical skills of the trainee doctors in an objective structured way. The exams are booked through the RCGP website. There are four exam attempts allowed. The CSA consist of 13 stations, clinical OSCE (objective structured clinical examination), which means 13 tasks of 10 minutes. The total time taken by CSA exam is 3 hours, with 15 minutes break after seven short cases. Candidates are allotted their separate room to conduct their tasks. This is to create the feel of the actual general practitioners consulting room. The marking is divided, into various factors, such as the ethical approach, data gathering, and clinical management and communication skills.

  • Utilizing data gathered from different sources is one of the skills required. This is associated with gathering history, interpreting it, and then examining it on that basis. The studying has to be done quickly, but with accuracy, efficiency, and in a systematic manner.
  •  Understanding the clinical issue and situation management is included in clinical management. The use of resources, patient's beliefs, health advancement, and decision-making skills are observed here.
  • The ethical and equal approach towards the patients are areas covered in GP.
  •  Interpersonal skills are tested as the doctors’ maximum time is involved in communicating with the patient in making them feel comfortable and understanding their problem. It’s a technique to be adopted in handling a particular patient.  Apart from the subjective score, numerical scores are also taken into consideration. Students must know the basics behind the marking criteria.
